I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the world of video games is rife with crime -- and I'm not talking about virtual decapitations in Mortal Kombat or the countless murders of the Grand Theft Auto series. The misdeeds in question are those committed on the design level; crimes where the player ends up being the victim. We've gathered an identity parade of recent games guilty of committing various degrees of injustice, and equated them to what we believe are their real-world crime equivalents.

Petty Misdemeanor - Unlockable Difficulty Levels

No other medium has the gall to force you into a stripped-down experience prior to the real thing. It would be like making the CliffsNotes of a novel mandatory before you could tackle the true text. And yet again and again we see games like Gears of wars 3 withhold cont ... Read more »

PAX East is absolutely crammed to the brim with excellent games. Honestly, the big-name titles at the major publishers' booths -- good as they are -- are considerably less interesting than the smaller titles that dominate the show floor (in numbers, if not in real estate). Some of the AAA titles look great, but they're not the show-stealers that all the quirky, inventive downloadable games lining the side of the expo floor are. Anyone who laments the loss of originality and craftsmanship in modern gaming clearly hasn't been paying attention and needs to spend a few hours strolling through booths at PAX. For anyone who loves diversity and creativity in games, this weekend is downright heartwarming.

Of all the small-team-developed labor-of-love projects I've seen at PAX East, my favorite just might be Klei's ... Read more »

A substantial quantity of alleged Halo 4 details have started appearing online. The latest issue of Game Informer, of which 343 Industries' next game is the cover story star, is hitting subscribers, some of which have been sharing details in various forums.
The story details Master Chief waking up four years after his cryo nap at the end of Halo 3. Cortana's detected an intruder on board, which happens to be Covenant invaders probably joining them from the fleet outside Chief's derelict ship. No word on why the Covenant are there at all, never mind why they've broken their truce with humans, nor what role they play in the narrative.

The story that follows Chief's wake-up will, as we know, explore the humanity of John 117, as well as continue Halo 3's theme of Cortana as a rampant AI. In that four year break, Cortana's adopted a new look. As usual, the campaign allows for four-player co-op.

Mass Effect 3

Following an incredible backlash over the ending of Mass Effect 3, BioWare promised last month that it would address the complaints of those who were displeased with the way Commander Shepard's story came to an end. The way in which it plans to do that was briefly outlined today, although we won't be getting our hands on the solution for another few months.

Put simply, there were two sides that most people could fall on in this debate: Those who are upset with the ending and want a new one (or at least more content) and those who believe BioWare should be free to do what they want with their game's story (and therefore don't want a new ending). As intimated last month, BioWare is going for a middle ground between the two. It today announced plans to release a downloadable content pack cal ... Read more »

Anyone who appreciates the loneliness and isolation in games like Super Metroid and Limbo will fall immediately in love with Closure. Winner of the DICE 2012 Indie Game Challenge, Closure is a puzzle-platformer for PSN that taps into man's primordial fear of the dark in ways which few games has ever quite understood. One of the very first things you're likely to do in the game is walk just beyond a light source and immediately fall to your doom. You see, the world of Closure is sprinkled with light sources that not only illuminate the world, but actually bring it into existence. Step outside the beam of a spotlight or glow of a light bulb, and you'll find yourself tumbling down into a void of nothingness.

While black space in Limbo was used primarily to advance the mood and atm ... Read more »

Silent Hill is the most ambitious survival horror series in video games -- one that (ideally) tosses aside its previous characters and repurposes a sleepy tourist town into a home for scattered souls and psychological terrors. This philosophy of starting anew each time is one of the signature elements that define the series, while other factors have contributed to making the horror more psychological. Rather than play on with the same terrifying creatures and gimmicks, the best Silent Hill games go one step further by attempting to challenge the player's understanding of reality, often presenting emotionally weary characters who slowly unravel a looming, and sometimes personal, mystery. While Silent Hill Downpour gets a lot of this right, it also stretches that last aspect a little too far.
